Ang ku kue (紅龜粿/红龟粿) (Taiwanese: âng ku kué) is a palm-sized traditional rice cake which looks like a red turtle. It is made of glutinous rice and shaped in a wooden mold with turtle pattern. Ang ku kue has sweet stuffing inside which usually is red bean paste, mung bean paste, peanut paste, or lotus seed paste. Ang ku kue can be found in traditional markets or at the stands near temples.

 

Why Red And Why Turtle-Shaped?

Ang ku kue is often used as offerings during traditional festivals or to worship ancestors. Red is always auspicious color in Chinese culture, while turtle means longevity.
