Che Lun Bing (車輪餅/车轮饼) Wheel Pie
Che Lun Bing (車輪餅/车轮饼) Wheel Pie |
Che lun bing (車輪餅/车轮饼) (pinyin with tones: chē lún bǐng) is named wheel pie because it requires a wheel-shaped mold bakeware to make it. It was introduced to Taiwan during Japanese occupation. Different from Japanese wheel pie, which is called 今川焼き (yimagawayaki), 大判焼き (ōbanyaki), or 回転焼き (kaitenyaki), Taiwanese che lun bing is less sweet and also has some savory flavors. Che lun bing is a favorable street snack you can find in traditional markets, night markets, or the pedestrian arcades. There are three classic and traditional flavors: red bean, cream, and dried radish shreds. Although there are more and more innovative flavors such as taro, black sesame, peanuts, and cheese, people are mostly fond of red bean and cream tastes. That is why che lun bing is also called hong dou bing (紅豆餅, red bean wheel pie) or nai you bing (奶油餅, cream wheel pie).
