Ma You Ji (麻油雞/麻油鸡) Sesame Oil Chicken Soup |
Ma you ji (麻油雞/麻油鸡) (pinyin with tones: má yóu jī) is a traditional dish which contains chicken, sesame oil, ginger, wolfberries (枸杞), and rice wine. It is a good nutrient supply for mothers who have just give birth and are under the postnatal care (坐月子); it is suggested to have ma you ji two weeks after giving birth. People usually eat ma you ji with white rice or vermicelli; sometimes cabbages are added to the soup to increase vegetable intake. Nowadays people also eat ma you ji when they are weak or the weather turns cooler; it helps warm up the body and give you energy!
