Phong Piann (椪餅/椪饼) Brown Sugar Hollow Cookies |
Phong piann (椪餅/椪饼) (Taiwanese: phòng piánn), also called tu bing (凸餅/凸饼) (pinyin with tones” tū bǐng) or zuo yue zi bing (坐月子餅/坐月子饼) (pinyin with tones: zuò yuè zi bǐng), is a spherical hollow cookie with brown sugar filling on the inner wall. Phong piann used to be the nutrient supply for mothers who are under the postnatal care of her family (坐月子). A traditional way to eat phong piann is to puncture a hole in the center of it, crack an egg inside, and use sesame oil to panfry until it is well cooked. Nowadays life is getting better; eating phong piann is no longer restricted to mothers who just give birth. You can find phong piann in some traditional pastry shops especially in Tainan (台南).
