Mua tsi (麻糬) (Taiwanese: 麻糍 muâ tsî) is a traditional sweet that is made of glutinous rice flour which tastes soft, sticky, and chewy. You can find mua tsi stands in traditional markets or in some mua tsi shops especially in Hualien (花蓮), where most Amis (阿美族, a mei zu) people live.
The Name Of Mua Tsi (麻糬)
Japanese call it 大福餅 (daifukumochi), so “mochi” becomes the most common English translation. Hakka (客家) people named it “粢粑 (zi ba)”; Amis people called it “杜侖 (du lun).” The most common writing of mua tsi in Taiwan, however, is “麻糬 (ma shu),” but people usually pronounce it in Taiwanese, “mua tsi.”
Types Of Mua Tsi (麻糬)
There are typically two kinds of mua tsi: one is a small rice ball coated with peanut powder (or black sesame powder); the other is a big rice ball stuffed with filling such as red bean paste, peanut powder, black sesame powder, mung bean paste, taro paste, and so on.
