Xiao Mi Zong (小米粽) Millet Dumpling
Xiao Mi Zong (小米粽) Millet Dumpling |
Xiao mi zong (小米粽) (pinyin with tones: xiǎo mǐ zòng) looks like zong zi (粽子, sticky rice dumpling), a traditional glutinous rice-based food wrapped by leaves. Xiao mi zong is a traditional food of Taiwanese indigenous peoples. There are some features differentiate between xiao mi zong and other zong zi. First, the shape of xiao mi zong is like a long cylinder, while most zong zi looks like a regular tetrahedron. Second, xiao mi zong is made of millet, not of glutinous rice. Besides, the inner leaves xiǎo mǐ zong used is khasya trichodesma (假酸漿葉), which is edible and helps digestion; the leaves of zong zi are just for wrapping.
