Bu Rou (卜肉) Bu Meat / Deep-Fried Pork Loin Strips
Bu Rou (卜肉) Bu Meat / Deep-Fried Pork Loin Strips
Bu rou (卜肉) (pinyin with tones: bǔ ròu) is a traditional Taiwanese snack which originates in Yilan (宜蘭). Bu rou is pork loin cut in strips, marinated with sauce and spices, coated with batter, and deep-fried until golden brown. You can add some pepper and sesame on it. Bu rou is a regional food and is not that common in other counties or cities, so if you travel to Yilan, don’t miss it!
Why it is called “Bǔ Ròu (卜肉)”? |
What Does “Bu (卜)” Mean?
“Deep fry” in Hakka is pronounced as “po,” which sounds like “pok (卜)” in Taiwanese, so it is written as “卜肉.” And “卜” in Chinese is pronounced as “bu,” so people now call it bu rou.
