Flavors Of Man Tou (饅頭)
In addition to the plain man tou, there are a variety of flavors you can find on the market. The more common ones are black sugar and taro flavors, which are sold in most traditional breakfast shops. Others “healthy” flavors like whole grains, pumpkin, sweet potato, black sesame, and nuts, are very popular recently. Still, there are cheese, chocolate, and coffee flavors which stand for the combines of Chinese and Western.
Ways To Eat Man Tou (饅頭)
Before multifarious flavors came out, plain man tou is the only choice. Besides eating it alone, most people cut it in the middle without cutting off and insert an egg inside. Older generation eats man tou with raw garlic or with some savory sauce. Nowadays, people in Taiwan sandwich anything they want into man tou, like rou song (肉鬆, pork floss), cheese, chicken chops, pork chops, ham, just to name a few.
