Wu Yu Zi (烏魚子) Mullet Roe
Wu Yu Zi (烏魚子) Mullet Roe |
Wu yu zi (烏魚子) (pinyin with tones: wū yú zǐ) in Taiwan mainly refers to the mullet roe which has been salted and dried. This golden-brown delicacy is quite pricey and seasonal and can be said to be a specialty of Taiwan. Because of the warm climate of Taiwan, mullet usually migrate to the coast of Taiwan during spawning season, which is November to January. The production of wu yu zi is also uneasy and time-consuming. It takes 7 to 10 days to finish the whole production process. In order to extend this precious food’s shelf life, it is usually kept in vacuum packaging. People like to have wu yu zi at the dinner reunion during Chinese New Year because wu yu zi symbolizes having many offspring and descendants.
Way To Enjoy Wu Yu Zi (烏魚子)
The classic way to enjoy wu yu zi is to dip it into wine for 3 minutes before baking. After baking 3 minutes, slice wu yu zi along with garlic sprouts into pieces. A tasty morsel is done! You can also switch garlic sprouts to radish, apples, or Asian pears. Another popular way to enjoy wu yu zi is to make it into fried rice. Since wu yu zi comes with salty flavor, wu yu zi itself is the best seasoning for the dish!
