Kao Rou (烤肉) Grilled Meat / BBQ

Kao rou (烤肉) (pinyin with tones: kǎo ròu) means grilled meat or any grilled food; it can also be the verb "grill" or "barbecue" in Chinese. Grilling, a kind of cooking methods, is of course not unique to Taiwan. The grilling culture on Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋節) in Taiwan, however, is quite interesting and has formed within the past 50 years.

Why Kao Rou (烤肉, BBQ) Became A Custom Of Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋節)?

There are several sayings about the origin of barbecuing on Mid-Autumn Festival. Rumor has it that camping become popular in the late 1970s, and some people went camping on Mid-Autumn Festival to admire the full moon. The very activity accompanied by camping was grilling. Another common saying is that the BBQ sauce television commercials popularized in the late 1980s, which included the slogan: “When one household grills, ten thousand families smell the aroma.” Still, some people believe that the popularity of people grilling in front of their house is due to the simplified and reduced-price grill racks. No matter which version of the story you believe, having a barbecue is now part of the customs on Mid-Autumn Festival just as eating moon cakes and pomelos (柚子), admiring the full moon, and spending time with families and friends.
