Dou Hua (豆花) Tofu Pudding
Dou Hua (豆花) Tofu Pudding |
Duo hua (豆花) (pinyin with tones: dòu huā), tofu pudding, is a traditional dessert which tastes just like tofu but softer because of much more water inside. Dou hua in Taiwan is always sweet; in some other Asian countries, it can be made in sweet or savory. You can find dou hua stands in the markets, on the streets, or in the food court of some department stores.
Variety Of Flavors And Ingredients
There are several kinds of sweet soup for dou hua: hong dou tang (紅豆湯, red bean soup), hua sheng tang (花生湯, sweet peanut soup), dou jiang (豆漿, soy milk), shao xian cao (燒仙草, hot grass jelly), brown sugar syrup, or the plain syrup. Besides the choices of soup, you can add the ingredients you like: peanuts, mung beans, red beans, fen yuan (粉圓, something like boba), yi ren (薏仁, Job’s tears), taro, yu yuan/di gua yuan (芋圓/地瓜圓, taro balls/sweet potato balls), hun kue (粉粿, jelly cake), fen tiao (粉條, noodle jelly), and so on. Some stands will have a menu with few combination sets so you just need to pick from the menu; others will let you choose 3~4 ingredients by yourself, which is more customized.
