Tu tuo yu geng (土魠魚羹/土魠鱼羹) (pinyin with tones: tǔ tuō yú gēng) is deep fried Spanish mackerel with thick soup. You can find it all over Taiwan, but it is famous and abounds in Tainan (台南). Tu tuo yu geng is part of geng (羹, thick soup) family, just like chi rou geng (赤肉羹, pork thick soup), you yu geng (魷魚羹, squid thick soup), hua zhi geng (花枝羹, cuttlefish thick soup), xia ren geng (蝦仁羹, shrimp thick soup), yu su geng (魚酥羹, fried fish cake thick soup), and zong he geng (綜合羹, hodgepodge thick soup). It is usually served with rice, noodles, or thin rice noodles; or you can eat it as a soup and order other staple food like lu rou fan (滷肉飯, braised pork on rice).
