Zha Chou Dou Fu (炸臭豆腐) Fried Stinky Tofu |
Zha chou dou fu (炸臭豆腐), fried stinky tofu, is a popular snack for Taiwanese but probably unacceptable for foreigners because of its strong smell. Zha chou dou fu can be found in almost every night market. The zha chou dou fu stands only serve one deep-fried food which is zha chou dou fu since its smelly odor may attach to other food.
Family Of Chou Dou Fu (臭豆腐)
There are several kinds of chou dou fu you can find in Taiwan. The first one is zha chou dou fu, which is cut in triangular prism or cube. It is usually served with pickled cabbage and basted with homemade garlic soy sauce. Another similar thing is tan kao chou dou fu (炭烤臭豆腐, grilled stinky tofu), which also have pickled cabbage and barbecue sauce spread on the top; it is deep fired first and then grilled in a skewer. There is another kinds of chou dou fu which contains much water and is softer than the previous two. Ma la chou dou fu (麻辣臭豆腐, spicy stinky tofu), is a combination of chou dou fu and spicy hot pot. It is dipped and cooked with spicy sauce and seasonings, so it has a pungent savor.
