Mua lau (麻粩or麻荖) (Taiwanese: muâ láu) is a traditional sweet which is basically made of taro flour and glutinous rice flour. After the kneaded dough ferments and expands after being deep fried, it will be coated with maltose and white sesame. If it is coated with bi phang (米香, poprice), then it will be bi lau (米粩, rice puff with poprice); if it is coated with peanut powder, it will be thoo tau lau (土豆粩or花生粩, rice puff with peanut powder).

Tradition Of Mua Lau (麻粩)

Traditionally we serve mua lau as offering for worshiping gods, goddesses, or ancestors in certain festivals or Chinese New Year. It costs time and efforts to make mua lau, so people did not have it in ordinary days. Now that the quality of life improves, mua lau becomes popular. You can find it in specialty shops, traditional markets, or old streets.
