Mi Gao (米糕) Rice Pudding / Rice Cake
Mi Gao (米糕) Rice Pudding / Rice Cake
Mi gao (米糕) (pinyin with tones: mǐ gāo) is a kind of delicacy made of glutinous rice. It can be made both savory and sweet. The savory one is just like rice and noodles which can be found in diners and restaurants. The sweet one mostly appears in traditional markets or near the temple because it is used to being served as offering.
Mi Gao (米糕) In North, Middle,
And South Of Taiwan
Salty mi gao is different in shape and flavor in the north, middle, and south of Taiwan. In the north, mi gao looks like you fan (油飯, steamed sticky rice), which is stir fry with the condiments and ingredients. In the middle of Taiwan, mi gao is also called tang a bi ko (筒仔米糕, tube rice pudding) (Taiwanese: tâng á bí ko) because it uses a tube-shaped cup to hold the rice. Besides, the ingredients are placed in the bottom of the tube and then covered by glutinous rice; when it is well steamed, just invert the tube, add some pork floss and pickled cucumbers, and it’s ready to serve. In the south, mi gao looks like lu rou fan (滷肉飯, braised pork on rice), but it is topped with pork floss and pickled cucumbers in addition to braised pork.
