Xia Ren Bah Uan (蝦仁肉圓/虾仁肉圆) Shrimp Meatball Mochi

Xia Ren Bah Uan (蝦仁肉圓/虾仁肉圆) Shrimp Meatball Mochi

Xia ren bah uan (蝦仁肉圓/虾仁肉圆) (pinyin with tones: xiā rén bah uân) is a kind of bah uan (肉圓, meatball mochi), but it is smaller than the original bah uan, with shrimp inside, and usually has 2 or 3 in one serving. If talking about bah uan, people will think of Changhua (彰化), then speaking of xia ren bah uan, Tainan (台南) springs to mind. Xia ren bah uan does not have translucent skin as bah uan; instead, it looks white more like uann kue (碗粿, savory rice pudding). In addition to ground pork, shrimp is the most essential stuffing that the original bah uan does not have.

Pronunciation Of Bah Uan (肉圓)

“Bah uan” is the pronunciation of 肉圓 in Taiwanese and it is how most people call it. You can also pronounce it literally in Chinese which is “rou yuan.” Sometimes you can see it is written as “肉丸” since the pronunciation of “丸 (wan)” in Chinese sounds the same as “圓 (uan)” in Taiwanese.
