Suan Cai Bao (酸菜包) Fried Chinese Sauerkraut Bun
Suan Cai Bao (酸菜包) Fried Chinese Sauerkraut Bun
Suan cai bao (酸菜包) (pinyin with tones: suān cài bāo) is a fried bun with suan cai (酸菜, Chinese sauerkraut) inside. Suan cai is made from mustard greens, so it is also called pickled mustard greens. It tastes a little bit sour, salty, and some is even spicy. You may find that there is a red dot on the outer skin. That is to distinguish suan cai bao from hong dou bao (紅豆包, fried red bean paste bun) and yu tou bao (芋頭包, fried taro paste bun). The stands selling suan cai bao may also sell shuang bao tai (雙胞胎, horse hooves donut) and zhi ma qiu (芝麻球, sesame ball).
