Cai Bao (菜包) Steamed Vegetable Bun
Cai Bao (菜包) Steamed Vegetable Bun |
Cai bao (菜包) is a kind of bao zi (包子, steamed stuffed bun) which is filled with vegetables. The most common cai bao is made of cabbage (高麗菜, gao li cai) so it is sometimes called gao li cai bao (高麗菜包). But there are other flavors of cai bao, like salted mustard green (雪裡紅, xue li hong / 雪菜, xue cai) and Chinese sauerkraut (酸菜, suan cai).
How To Differentiate Bao Zi (包子) With Different Flavors?
Since the appearance of cai bao, rou bao (肉包, steamed pork bun), and sun bao (筍包, steamed bamboo shoot bun) are the same and it is hard to tell which is which flavor if you buy many of them at a time, people came up with some solutions to this problem. Some vendors put a red dot on the bun just like what they do on suan cai bao (酸菜包, fried Chinese sauerkraut bun). Another way is to make it a different shape, mostly a leaf shape as shown in the picture.
