Xiao Long Tang Bao (小籠湯包/小笼汤包) Soup Dumpling
Xiao long tan bao (小籠湯包/小笼汤包) (pinyin with tones: xiǎo lóng tāng bāo), also called tang bao (湯包) (pinyin with tones: tāng bāo), features fresh and savory soup inside the dumpling. Xiao long tang bao is one of the most popular and must-eat cuisines in Taiwan. The “well-known xiao long bao (小籠包)” is actually xiao long tang bao, while the “real xiao long bao (小籠包)” is mini pork bun, which looks and tastes like rou bao (肉包, pork bun).
Tang Bao (湯包) VS. Zheng Jiao (蒸餃)
The taste of tang bao is more like zheng jiao (蒸餃, steamed dumpling), which is also cooked in a bamboo steamer. The most different part between tang bao and zheng jiao is that tang bao is full of soup so people usually sip at soup first before eating it. Besides, the shape of tang bao is similar to xiao long bao which is twisted and sealed at the top, but the skin is thinner and translucent than xiao long bao and zheng jiao.
