Xiao long bao (小籠包/小笼包) (pinyin with tones: xiǎo lóng bāo) is just like rou bao (肉包, pork bun) but smaller. It is also cooked in a bamboo steamer just as zheng jiao (蒸餃, steamed dumpling) and tang bao (湯包, soup dumpling) do. Xiao long bao is a popular breakfast, afternoon snack, and late night supper. You can find it in traditional breakfast shops or at food trucks on the street.
Xiao Long Bao (小籠包) VS. Xiao Long Tang
Bao (小籠湯包) / Tang Bao (湯包)
Some people may regard xiao long bao as tang bao (湯包, soup dumpling), or called xiao long tang bao (小籠湯包), but tang bao has transparent and thin skin and is filled with broth. On the other hand, xiao long bao has soft and chewy dough skin, which is similar to rou bao.
