You Dou Fu (油豆腐) Fried Bean Curd
You Dou Fu (油豆腐) Fried Bean Curd
You dou fu (油豆腐) (pinyin with tone marks: yóu dòu fu), known as fried bean curd, is a common side dish you can easily find in diners or noodle shops which sell lu rou fan (滷肉飯), khong rou fan (炕肉飯), ji rou fan (雞肉飯), tshiik a mi (切仔麵), mi fen tang (米粉湯), niu rou mian (牛肉麵), and so forth. It is also a regular member of oo peh tshiat (黑白切, assorted-cut foods) since it is already cooked and served fast. Just add some julienne ginger and baste some thick soy sauce, it is ready to go. You dou fu can also be braised with other food like lu dan (滷蛋, spiced corned egg), hai dai (海帶, kelp), and lu rou (滷肉, braised pork).
The Pronunciation of Dou Fu (豆腐)
If you have learned Chinese, you may find it interesting that the character “腐” is ought to be the third tone “fǔ” when pronounced together with other words, but when it comes to dòu fu (豆腐), it becomes neutral tone “fu,” just like some other words that the second character will change the original tone to neutral tone. However, people in Taiwan more tend to pronounce the original tone “fǔ,” which makes a great difference between Taiwanese and Chinese speaking.
