You Tiao (油條/油条) Deep-Fried Bread Stick / Deep-Fried Chinese Donut
You Tiao (油條/油条) Deep-Fried Bread Stick / Deep-Fried Chinese Donut |
You tiao (油條/油条) (pinyin with tones: yóu tiáo), known as deep-fried bread stick or deep-fried Chinese donut, is a traditional snack which is basically just made of flour. You tiao is indispensable to traditional breakfast. You can find it in every traditional breakfast shop or some food stands on the streets.
Two Kinds Of You Tiao (油條)
There are two kinds of you tiao. One is crispy outside and soft inside, which can be eaten with dou jiang (豆漿, soy milk), xing ren cha (杏仁茶, almond tea), and sandwiched in shao bing (燒餅, sesame flat bread), and dan bing (蛋餅, Taiwanese egg crepe). The other type is deep-fried twice, so it has darker skin and is hard and brittle; this kind of you tiao is used to wrap in fan tuan (飯糰, sticky rice roll).
Application Of You Tiao (油條)
You tiao goes well with many dishes. Besides soy milk, almond tea, shao bing, dan bing, and fan tuan, it is often seen with zhou (粥, congee), ma la guo (麻辣鍋, spicy hot pot), and some stir-fried dishes such as you tiao sha lang (油條沙朗, beef stir-fry with deep-fried bread stick).
